Need A Romantic Picnic Idea?

By Andrew Krause Ah, spring, when a young man’s thoughts turn to romance, and visions of things like moonlit strolls, quiet walks in the woods and picnics in a secluded spot look even more alluring. With today’s fast-food culture, though, a romantic picnic idea can be hard to come by. Let’s see if we can’t help you out a little bit there, Romeo (or Juliet). First off, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got the right sort of munchies. I’m not talking about the main dish, here, I’m talking about those tasty nibbles you’ll hopefully be feeding each other while looking deep into each other’s eyes, or some such scenario. Depending on your partner’s tastes, you’ve got a wide range to choose from. Fresh fruit is always a good choice, with whole strawberries dipped in sweet whipped cream (very transportable), grapes or slices of melon being decadent choices. For the carnivores, delicious deli meats and cheeses rolled in tortillas or crepes make low-mess choices. Bits of choice cheeses are another idea, just make sure you know your date’s preferences., When it comes to a main dish, simplicity is your watchword. You don’t want to have to interrupt the flow of a lovely meal to put together something intricate or, worse, to clean up after something messy. Stick to sandwiches, cold salads or wraps. Wraps are a great choice, because they give you a chance to combine so many different flavors in one handy container. You can assemble a complementary assortment of your sweetie’s favorite flavors. For dessert, your options are almost limitless. Base your choices on your partner’s favorites. From petit fours to chocolate-dipped strawberries, there is an abundance of transportable sweets that will sate the sweet tooth and give you a chance to do some more of that all-important feeding each other activity we talked about earlier. A little something drippy, like chocolate or caramel, isn’t necessarily a bad thing here, for reasons I’ll leave to your own mind to figure out. These are just a few starters. Your best romantic picnic idea will come from your own mind, since you know your partner best! Wooden Boxes That Wow

By Lisa Koosis The unfinished wood projects section of your local craft store can offer up some great treasures: wooden boxes. They come in a number of shapes and sizes. Some have pretty, scalloped edges. Others are shaped like hearts or books or stars. Who can resist little wooden boxes? They’re perfect for hiding away those special trinkets. So go ahead, treat yourself to the wooden box of your choice, and here are a few fun, crafty ideas for making your wooden box look just fabulous. – Beautiful papers and wooden boxes — a match made in decoupage heaven! Decoupage is an easy technique that works well on wooden boxes. Choose pretty paper to cover your box in. Patterned gift-wrap is a great choice, or find a magazine with beautiful artwork and clip some out. You’ll also need a bottle of Mod Podge, which is available at any craft retailer. This is a multi-purpose item, sealer, glue and finisher all in one. If you can’t find a paper to your liking at home, most craft stores sell packages of assorted papers for papercraft projects. – Stickers–not just for kids these days. Go ahead and buy a few. There are stickers for all occasions, and many aren’t in the least bit childish. Stickers can be a great way to liven up a plain wooden box, and can be used in conjunction with your decoupage papers. This is also a great option for those crafting with younger children. – Bows and other assorted baubles. Dig out that trusty hot glue gun. With some pretty baubles and bows, you can get really creative with your wooden box. Think about gluing on a variety of fancy buttons atop your box. Broken pieces of jewelry can be another great source of glue-ons, as are silk flowers and foam cut-outs. – Paint your box. Wooden boxes are conducive to painting techniques. Pick out bright colors or, for the truly artistic, why not use your wooden box as a canvas and paint a beautiful scene? The possibilities for decorating a plain wooden box are endless. Go ahead and combine techniques. Why not paint the bottom of the box and decoupage the top? With time and imagination, you can create a beautiful keepsake, perfect for stowing away special trinkets. Is She the One?

By Vlady Peters From the beginning of time, when a man was looking for his mate, at the back of his mind was the thought, am I choosing wisely. Today, he will get on the internet and fool himself into believing that the glamorous photograph of his lady love, is a true and honest representation. And, of course, the details of her many accomplishments and talents are in no way being exaggerated. In matters of the heart, the likelihood of being taken in is always on the cards. Poor Henry Vlll felt very badly done by when he found that the woman he had chosen by the picture given to him, and by the stories of her beauty and excellence he’d heard from her friends and family, did not measure at all when he saw her in person. No doubt, though she was more discreet and not as vocal, his prospective bride had some second thoughts herself. He had looked a lot more virile, and no where near as Buddha-like in his picture, as he did in real life. Some five hundred years ago, the Japanese went about the discovery of the potential brides suitability in a careful and systematic manner. In expressing his interest, even before he actually met the girl herself, the suitor would compose a romantic thirty-one syllable poem. Upon receiving it, if the girl was interested, she would compose a poem in return. Studying the parchment with care, the suitor would then decided what sort of a person was suggested by the composition and the brush strokes. Was this a woman of accomplishment worthy of him, or was she some drop-out, barely able to differentiate between one end of the brush and the other, and had as much of an idea of what a syllable was as Scrooge Christmas cheer. Needless to say, the girl and her family scrutinized his handwriting and versification with the same care as he did theirs, but since females always outnumbered the males, she was inclined to be less fastidious than he. A lot of couples place their future happiness in matchmakers who get paid for bringing about a match. As to be expected, when money enters the equation, beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder. And so it was inevitable that meeting each other for the first time one or the other party and often both would be disappointed. She had to make the sale, and she couldnt be too fussy. An apocryphal story has it, that one groom, upon meeting the matchmakers choice, complained softly that the girl was neither rich, nor beautiful as the mattchmaker had proclaimed her to be. The matchmaker, much more loudly, assured him that he didnt have to whisper. The girl was deaf as well! Rebuilding Trust

By Timothy Cole The loss of trust is a very painful experience. It often involves a lot of hurt, confusion, anger, and sadness. Dealing with these emotions is critical when trying to rebuild trust. When upset, we want our partners to understand our point of view – to understand our feelings and emotions. Understanding how we feel is important because it helps us deal with our negative feelings and move beyond them. If a partner does not take the time to make us feel understood – we try to get even – we try to make our partners feel as bad as we do. Even though it sounds childish, when someone does not understand our hurt or pain – we try to make them feel what we are feeling (this is often an unconscious response). Not feeling understood, often leads to a game of inflicting mutual hurt. In most cases, partners do not take the time to make us feel understood because they do not know how to do it OR because they get defensive (feel under attack). When accused of wrongdoing, people often try to… apologize offer excuses and explanations withdraw or even attack back… These strategies do NOT work because they fail to create real understanding. Simply put, people need to feel understood before apologies are offered and explanations are given. It is virtually impossible to rebuild trust until people who have been harmed feel understood. So, when trying to build or repair trust – it helps to see the situation from a partner’s point of view. Try to understand why the other person is so upset – directly acknowledge his or her feelings (“you are angry, hurt, confused”) and his or her interpretation of the situation (“and, you have every right to be upset, because what I did was wrong.”) You basically have to agree that the other person’s feelings are legitimate and fair – let the other person know that you get it. If you can do this, trust is going to be much easier to regain. If you can make someone feel understood when they are upset, they are more likely to… calm down forgive you feel closer listen to your side of the story… If you don’t take the time to understand your partner’s feelings, rebuilding trust is much more difficult to do. But, once you make a partner feel understood, it becomes possible to offer an effective apology. Timothy Cole, PhD. Real Estate Marketing Strategies: How to Stop Struggling and Start Attracting

By Maya Bailey, Ph.D. Having been a business coach for Real Estate Agents for more that 10 years, I often hear my clients say things like, Why does this have to be a Struggle or Im feeling desperate, I need more clients. They try the right marketing approaches , they manage their time and it looks like they are doing everything they can. However most business owners are missing the key ingredient: The Law Of Attraction. In this article, Part I, I will give an overview of the Law of Attraction and how it can make all the difference in your success or failure. In future articles, Ill go into more detail on each step. The Five Steps of the Law of Attraction: 1. Be aware of what you dont want. Believe it or not, it is essential that we all know what we dont want. Why? Because it helps us identify what we do want. What dont you want in your life? Make a list and write it down. 2. Be aware of what you do want. So after making your list of dont wants, go back to each item. Write next to it a list of you do want. Its helpful to take one page and divide it into 2 columns, the left column is Dont wants and the right column is Do wants After you have your Do Want, just scratch out your Dont wants. So what do you want in your life and/or your business? If youre like most of my clients you list of Do Wants, reads something like this: I want an abundance of clients, I want a full bank account , I want a 6 figure income and so on. Please be detailed in your list of your Do Wants”. Clear your beliefs. What does that mean? It simply means to do a little soul searching and find the self-limiting beliefs that get in the way of your success. Here are beliefs I often hear: I dont have what it takes Im not smart enough Im afraid of failing I cant find any joy in my work If I succeed, Ill have to give up my family life Heres the crucial thing to know, even if you are doing all the right marketing strategies, you would sabotage your success as long as these beliefs are hidden away in your consciousness or unconsciousness. What are your self-limiting beliefs? rite them down. 4. Feel what it feels like to have your ideal professional life. Simply put, when you act as if, you send an energy out to the universe that magnetizes the results to you that you want. I will elabortate in detail on future articles. 5. The last step is the most understood. Its called Allow. In other words, allow your desires to come to you. What does allow mean? It means to suspend doubt and assume that what you want is on the way. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With her 30 years of psychological expertise, Dr. Maya Bailey specializes in helping Real Estate Professionals who want more clients, more free time, and a better lifestyle to create confidence, a positive mindset, and a step-by-step blueprint for success. The Behavioral Effect of Commercial Sexploitation & Influence

By Rion Williams Most people will just take what they see in front of them (and what they are programmed to see) at face value. Most people are ignorant to the dynamics BEHIND reality because they’re habituated to being the conditioned response of the programming. They have the ‘illusion’ of choice but the true type of relationship they have is one of conditional programming. The producer’s are the ones with the real power in that relationship. You look at a production, commercial or ‘program’ and you see what you see. Few can actually (think independently and) differentiate the independent elements within, where they came from or most importantly the overall intent (and power) of the messenger. You’re not aware of the type of true relationship you have with it nor are you aware of how much it is actually influencing you over the long term. so when it comes dating and success with amazingly beautiful women, guys want the end result but they don’t understand the meaning and truth behind the behavior of these women in the first place. They see these women acting aloof and out of this universe just like their t.v., magazine and film role models. After a certain amount of time that consciousness starts to transfer over into the subconscious. You may not think that one ‘commercial’ has any impact on you but it does based on the type of true relationship you have with it. You may think that looking at a gorgeous swimsuit model on the cover of a magazine doesn’t affect your success with women yet it’s the main reason (at the root) why you aren’t successful. Now, add up over the years millions of men being watchers of television, cover girl enthuasiasts and unlimited commercial ‘programming’ recipients. What eventually happens? All of this conscious thought becomes habituated PLUS they’re adding emotion to it. The architect’s KNOW how to make it emotional to trap people even more. Why do you think sexploitation is so profitable? Why do you think t.v. execs create the most drama right before a ‘commercial’ break so that you just HAVE to keep watching. They create a co-dependent relationship to their advantage. They’ve got you ‘hooked’. They’ve already influenced your behavior. ; If you were truly independent and powerful you wouldn’t even be WATCHING t.v. but rarely because you know of it’s behavioral influence. If you want power and control back that you never thought you had, then examine things. ‘What type of relationship do you really have to all these sources of influence’? So many millions of people are being influenced without their knowledge. The type of relationship they have with the ‘architects’ moves into their nonverbal subconsciousness after years of ‘programming’. They’re not aware of how or how much they’re being influenced nor how much they have already been influenced to this point. It affects their daily life, thoughts and behavior because the subconscious has taken over. Being a byproduct of commercialism is nothing to be proud of. People of power are not co-dependent or in a conditional response relationship to this programming. They’re either the programmers themselves or they’re independent and free from it. Yes you can use t.v. to your advantage but there is always a true type of relationship. I recommend you choose 3 programs TOPS that you would like to watch (there is no ‘need’ because need connotes dependency and powerlessness) and then use TiVo or completely skip the commercials or turn the volume down. Then you’ll be more of the one who has true relational authority. Remember that powerful people only operate out of interdependencies or win/win ‘equal exchange’ of value or information. If you’re being programmed to your previous ignorance, it’s time to take cognition and get into a powerful relationship so that you are the one in control instead of soaking other people’s power in like a sponge. I encourage you to look ‘behind the scenes’ at the intent and motives behind what is really going on. This will be much easier from a viewpoint of being committed to only win/win relationships of value. You’ll be able to cut a lot of crap out of your life once you see what has been really going on. If you’re really advanced you’ll be able to see how certain programming has influenced and affected your own behavior (such as putting sex on a pedestal or glorifying the social status of anyone you would ever meet who has been ‘on tv’). See things for what they really are and you will have much more cognition and power. Rion Williams is one of the foremost experts in dating advice, personal power and social dynamics. How to Find Cheap Secured Loans Online

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rachael_Gallant]Rachael Gallant You’re looking to put a new roof or an extension onto your home, or maybe the kitchen needs a refurbish. It could be that you want to roll all your current bills into one lower payment, or have a chance to take that family cruise through the fjords of Norway at a great price – whatever the reason, you’re looking for cheap secured loans and finding yourself staring at page after page after page of adverts all promising cheap secured loans are just a click away – but every click just leads you to another page of adverts promising cheap secured loans. This is supposed to be EASY, or so you’ve been told – but finding cheap secured loans online can be a bit like poking around a haystack looking for the proverbial needle. There is an easier way – one that will help you find the best secured loans online – not just the cheapest loans, but the ones that are the best fit for you. Rather than poking about willy nilly with a pitchfork, have a sitdown and follow along with us step by step. 1. Figure out how much you need to borrow. If it’s for debt consolidation, total up all your outstanding debts, along with any early repayment fees. If it’s for home improvements, shop round for an estimate of the cost, etc. Before you start comparing loans, it helps to have a notion of how much you want to borrow. 2. Check your credit score. Your credit score will directly affect the loans for which you can qualify. The higher it is, the cheaper loans you’ll be able to get. You don’t need a specific number, but it’s helpful to know if your credit is excellent, good, average, fair or poor. Get your credit report and give it a good lookover. 3. If there are problems with your credit report, fix them. Approximately one in every three people who check their credit reports find errors on them. Those errors range from charged off bills still being listed to entire credit cards in their name that they’ve never held. If there are errors in your credit report, write to the credit reference agency immediately to ask that they correct them. 4. Compare loans online to find cheap secured loans aimed at your credit rating. Skip the search engines, though. Googling for cheap secured loans is likely to plunge you into the haystack without any sort of guidance at all. Instead, start your search at a site like advancestart.com that specialises in presenting loans for your comparison. 5. Don’t assume that loans with the lowest APRs are your best deals in cheap secured loans. There are a lot of different factors that add up to the best loan for you, and you’ll have to do a bit of homework of your own before you can decide on which is which. If you’ve got a bit of wiggle room in the monthly finances, then total loan cost is your best comparison point. Anything you’re not spending to borrow money is money that you have to invest and build more money, after all. If, on the other hand, you’re tightening your belt buckles already, then your best cheap secured loans may well be those that offer a lower monthly payment but a higher overall cost. Be sure to compare for cheap secured loans by the comparison method that makes the most sense for you. 6. Narrow loans down by APR and market. Look for loans that are aimed at the segment of the market you fit. If your credit is poor, you won’t do anything but waste your time applying for loans aimed at those with excellent credit. Use the APR as a preliminary judge of just how cheaply the company does business in comparison to others. 7. Ask for multiple rate quotes Every company has their own lending scale – which means that one company may only be willing to lend you 60% of your vested value in your home at 15% APR – but another may be able to offer you a [http://www.advancestart.com]personal loan for 11% APR for 75% or even 80% of the value of your home equity. The only way to find out is to ask for a loan rate quote. When you do, be sure to specify that you only grant permission for a quotation credit search, not a full credit search. The company will get all the information they need to offer you a quote on a rate – but it won’t be noted on your credit record as a loan application. Rachael Gallant has worked for the UK financial services market for a number of years specialising in [http://www.advancestart.com]secured loan applications for UK home owners. She’s a busy mum and understands how time consuming it can be to sort through the hundreds of different offers whilst trying to interpret the associated jargon. Virginia Lawyers

By Richard Romando A lawyer is a person who is licensed by the state to provide legal services and to represent their clients in courts of law. An important task of a lawyer is to explain and interpret the law to the client. Lawyers handle a wide range of legal issues. A general lawyer is someone who handles matters of general legal relevance. Virginia lawyers are lawyers who practice law in the state of Virginia. Virginia lawyers can be located online through their websites or offline through listings in directories. As with all lawyers, the task for prospective clients in Virginia is to locate lawyers who have the expertise and experience in handling cases of a similar nature. Most Virginia lawyers are either in private service or work for law firms. Some are employed with the federal and/or state government. Fees charged by Virginia lawyers depend on the nature of the case and on the amount of time they spend on the case. Examples of fee structures are hourly flat fees and contingent fees. As the term goes, hourly fees are charged on an hourly basis, and the final lawyer fees would be a simple multiplication of the hourly fee by the total hours spent on the case. Contingent fees are fees that lawyers charge as a percentage of the amount that their client is awarded upon winning the case. Usually, there is a consultation fee that is required to be paid at the time of meeting with the lawyers. This, however, does not bind the lawyer to proceed with the case. Virginia lawyers have started utilizing technology to maximize the efficiency of their services. Apart from utilizing libraries, lawyers in the state supplement the written source with legal information and database on the Internet. Lawyers in Virginia share information amongst themselves through videoconferencing, electronic filing, and voice-recognition software. Personal computers and laptops have become common devices to store general legal and case-specific information. Virginia Lawyers provides detailed information on Virginia Lawyers, West Virginia Lawyers, Virginia Accident Lawyers, Virginia Real Estate Lawyers and more. Virginia Lawyers is affiliated with Texas Family Lawyers. The Right Way To Hang Things On The Wall – Part I – Getting Started

By Bill Harvey If you are displaying a valuable collection of object-de-art, you MUST do it right, and preparation is the key here is HOW-TO. Have you ever found some sort of nail -any damn sort of nail- and used the wrench or a big screwdriver to sort of bludgeon it into the wall and then hung a picture on it? Hung it after fiddling about trying to find the nail with the little toothed do-dad on the back of the picture? And then tried to get it to hang straight and stay that way? Everyone has. Not a bad way to hang calendars and pictures that are sort of light and more decorative then meaningful. This is NOT the way to go if you really care about a collection of some authority. I mean something like 13 signed baseballs, or WWI bayonets, or brass model railroad engines. Such things need to be put in a case and that case needs to be hung correctly. Here is how -and apologies if you have read my instructions before -they tend to be pretty detailed. This is for the folks that have never done such things at all and need all manner of advice. But even if you are pretty good at such things, you are apt to learn a thing or two here. Hang in.* STEP ONE: GET ORGANIZED I’m a big fan of gathering everything you will need and approaching the job with planning and preparation. In my experience -the difference between a simple-job-well-began-&-promptly-finished…. and a cluster-f____ (Chinese-Fire-Drill / fiasco / Tim Taylor Adventure / call it what you will) is usually a mater of preparation. I will address the necessary tools and hardware shortly, but have you given thought to the less obvious -but equally important- things? Things like a ladder or step-stool if necessary. How about a helper? Maybe a spirit level if your eye is not adept at judging such things? (And if there is any doubt about your needing a level, YOU NEED ONE.) Don’t underestimate the need for a refreshing beverage of some sort You will obviously need what ever tools are necessary to drive / attach / screw-in / generally attach whatever fastening device you need -but the decision as to which to use is rather a loaded question and will be addressed anon. STEP TWO: FIGURE OUT WHERE IT GOES This part might involve a helper or spouse. You hold your display case up against the wall and someone else stands back and says things like, “No, a little to the right -no, too far, now up a little. More to the right” etc. Nothing to do but to do it. If you are working alone, this step is considerably simplified. You just put it where you like it -at something like your own eye level- and it’s done. Once it’s right -either via the committee method or the “This is my collection and I -by-Gosh- like it there-,” make two little pencil marks. One somewhere under the case, -to indicate how high, and another one on one side or the other, -to indicate where one side of it goes. Next thing is to figure out what is holding up this particular wall. Ordinarily it’s wood two-by-fours. This is not profound, but the 2 x 4′s are behind wallboard of some sort -and the guys that put up the wall board worked very hard to make sure you will not be able to see the 2×4′s. So how do you find them? Those little electronic sensor things work pretty well, but they aren’t cheap. Knocking on the wall with your knuckles also works -most of the time. Here is a tip -outlets are always on one side or other of a stud. Find an outlet and knock on the wall to determine if the outlet is to the right or to the left of it. The wall will sound hollow on one side and more solid on the other. Measure over 16 inches and knock again. It will probably sound solid. If it sounds hollow, measure over 24″ and then try. Some houses are built with the studs 24″ apart -but the majority are built on 16″ centers. You may have to measure several increments of 16″ to get from the place you found the first stud till you get to the place on the wall where you want to hang the display case, but it’s no big. Give you the chance to practice your multiplication tables (16″, 32″, 48″, 64″ etc.) Put a tiny little pencil mark on the wall where you think theres a stud. Put it at about eye level. Easier to find it again this way and you will probably cover it up with the case. Now study your pencil marks especially the one on the side- with respect to the studs. A tape measure and a few more light (judicious) pencil marks might be appropriate. If you are hanging a tall narrow case and the stud falls more or less in the middle, you can get by with two fasteners, one high and one low. It its a wide case and falls on, (covers) two or more studs, two screws are appropriate one on the left and one on the right. If its a big case and spans two or more studs, go with two high and two low. Simple enough. The problem arises when one end of a wide case doesn’t land on a stud. Or you find that when you have the case exactly where you want it, only one side lands on a stud. This is a job for hollow wall anchors but more on this subject later. *If this is all beyond you, and the thing you want to hang is heavy or valuable, have a look at my advice on Hiring Carpenters and Other Useful People. In Part II, I take up the fascinating topic of nails and screws and bolts. Dull, but VERY important. Moving From Sales To Marketing

By Tom Dougherty When Should Marketing Take a Front Seat? At some point in a company’s growth, there comes a time when it decides whether the product or service it offers has exponential growth opportunities. If these opportunities exist, then a strategy must be formed to take the company to its full potential. Often this involves a shift from a sales-driven focus to a marketing driven status. All change in the corporate world is stressful, even if it is positive change. Nevertheless, the move from sales to marketing is one of the most stressful. Why? Because it entails leaving “what brought us here” and embracing a future with which we are somewhat inexperienced. The entrepreneurial spirit that spurred the company growth in the first place needs to be harnessed and yet stimulated in a manageable way. The reason to make the change is simple: the bottom line. If the product or service has mass appeal, it is more efficient cost-wise to market and advertise for the business than to expand the sales force. Cost per lead and cost per close should weigh in favor of advertising and marketing. If it does, then the return on investment will increase. Top Sales People Do Not Great Marketers Make Sales people are often put in charge of the department and the mindsets are, and should be, vastly different. At times, they may well be at complete odds. Salespeople make their bread and butter by tailoring the sales argument to the prospect. If they are any good at all, they will avoid strict positioning and benefit because they know that all sales ultimately require “selling themselves. A predetermined sales argument and a scripted benefit presentation are their worst enemy and greatest nightmare. A top sales manager will try not to interfere with what works. Marketing is different. It is not by nature one-on-one and is designed to have mass influence. It requires a discipline and marketing shrewdness that flies in the face of much of the sales experience. The disciplines needed to make the changes are exactly that disciplines. In addition, more often than not, the lack of discipline and unorthodox approach of division heads has accounted for their prior success. However, just as the micro management that is instrumental in building a business suffocates its eventual growth, entrepreneurial marketing will derail the attempt to harness its momentum in a corporate culture. The Cultures Can Work Together The secret to building success is incorporating both cultures in the new one. It is preferable to maintain the entrepreneurial spirit because it is the germ of growth and innovation, but it needs to be harnessed. The internal combustion engine gets its horsepower because the unbridled explosion of gasoline and spark is contained and focused within the mechanics of cylinder, piston, and valve. Corporate management must find a way to fan the flames of ingenuity. They must bolster the “take charge” attitude in the company’s middle management while wrestling the marketing power from the same individual units. A Big Difference Marketing requires us to look at the target audience as a whole, understand them as a group, evaluate their psychographics as well as demographics, and apply a strategy that exploits the most powerful advantage available to us. Notice that I did not say the most powerful advantages we have. This is important because advertising that works is always single-minded. A great marketing and advertising director will seek the counsel of the sales force when creating the strategy, but will avoid running the final product by them for approval. Why? Because salespeople deal with closing the sale and need lots of benefit weapons to be successful. They view marketing and advertising as a similar beast. Sure, the zebra and the horse might look similar, but genetically they are so different that they cannot successfully mate. Great advertising and marketing requires the identification of a position in the marketplace. Don’t Be Myopic The big picture is important here. Know the competition. Know the terrain. Know the target market. It is not enough to understand your product or your competition’s product; you need to understand their position in the marketplace. Benefits tell only a small part of the story. If all that ever mattered was benefit and product superiority, then we would all be using Apple’s Macintosh and news from DELL would not matter to us at all. Salespeople care about benefits. Marketers care about ownership of strategic position. The first step in building a brand position in the market is looking at your product or service in the crucible of the marketplace and identifying a germinal belief that relates to your business. What is it that the target market holds to be true in their lives? How does this understanding make your product or service a fundamental building block in their quest for fulfillment? What drives this category? What is the single most powerful statement you can make about your brand that might cause an action or change to take place in the precepts of the target audience? Look for a Niche That You Can Own Change the playing field and alter the selling argument. If we can successfully shift the view of the target audience, even slightly, we can mortally wound the competition. Remember, preference for a product need not be overwhelming. If your category creation can provide a simple “might be better” uncertainty to the status quo, you win. In a horse race, it is not necessary to win by a length. A nose will do just fine. No one remembers who took second place to Secretariat’s Kentucky Derby win. Yet, Secretariat won by a nose. The Tools The opportunity here is to look at the category as it is. Most businesses have grown organically and so have the categories. It is an advantage to look at them and redefine them through careful planning. Then we must develop an understanding of the precepts that always drive them. Once we have analyzed the market and category, once we have evaluated the target audiences based on the strategy of identifying the beliefs that drive them, we can begin the task of owning a position. Position speaks about your company. Your position statement should be answered by the question. “Why are we here?” it is your mission statement and corporate charter distilled down to a simple phrase. For our target audience, it is an elevating and aspiring reach that helps pay off our brand. Position Is Not a Sales Tool Position is like real estate. The more secluded and free of neighbors the more valuable the property is, provided it is located in a desirable area. A powerful position is your reason to be. It is the spark that ignited the company in the beginning and is the flame that keeps it going, growing, and innovating. It must never be static and is never defined as a product or service. The best place to start is to look at what you do and ask yourself why you do it. Every product or service you provide meets a need. We are successful only if we create a new product to meet an existing need, illuminate a new need, and fill it, or improve an existing solution to a need. The key element in all this is the word “need.” Positions are real only in the light of a real tangible need. The more immediate the need, the more powerful the position. Our job as marketers is to define the need in unshakeable terms and bring the benefit of vision. A great position allows for growth, change, and personal benefit. Once we know what our customer holds as being necessary, we can position ourselves as the company that understands the importance of delivering it, whatever it is. This is a subtle difference. We are talking about what we believe, not what we do it is in this difference that the marketing position takes its breadth of life. I have seen many poor positions in my experience positions that are unbelievable, indefensible and without real meaning. Such as providing “better products, solutions or systems.” The problem with these ideas is that they have no meaning; they talk about what you do and not why you do it. Why you do it is a differentiating benefit that influences your target market. The more distinct the position is from the competition’s claims, the more powerful it becomes. Marketing is a Different Focus Without the focus provided by a powerful and distinct marketing position, advertising and marketing dollars are wasted. To that end, it is inevitable that a consistency of message and centralization of marketing power be set. All aspects of the brand and position ‘need to be reigned in and one final authority needs to exist. Marketing by committee means certain failure and can only be unlimited spending. The idea of a central theme and marketing/advertising strategy is to manage spending and outperform an independent sales force. Once you have built and evaluated a position, efforts should be turned to brand. Our theory of brand differs from the brand management used by package goods companies. The old brand ideas have failed. Brand was supposed to protect margins against commodity products. However, I am hard pressed to name any package goods product that is not competing today on price and promotion. The care and concern of USP, tag line, logo and consistence of presence are Important, but sound more like corporate identity to me than brand theory. In the Stealing Share modern brand model, brand does not belong to you. It resides in the perception of your customer. We know that position speaks about us and proclaims our reason to be, but speaks about our customer and their need to become. Marketing Needs Brand To Work Brand is the expectation that the customer brings to the purchase of a product or service. It is the difference a customer is willing to pay for your product or service over and above the accepted value of the commodity solution. In the realm of brand resides ail’ profit margins. Brand answers the question “Who am I?” and the who refers to the customer, not us. Everyone is in a constant state of becoming and every purchase choice we make is an attempt at reinforcing whom we believe we are. The purpose of brand is to make the use or purchase of our product or service irresistible, to make the target audience feel incomplete without it. This means making sure that the tenor and personality we project are in keeping with the core beliefs of our target audience. Brand attracts the customer as ice cream attracts children. Building a brand is akin to turning on the power of an electromagnet. The more amps we send through the wire, the more attractive power it influences over the iron shavings it is designed to attract.
